During the four day Orientation Session, July 10 - 14, 2011, the 14th TSHL was organized into nine Legislative Issues Committees, five Administrative Committees and Special Committees were authorized by the Executive Committee. Interim studies were selected by each Legislative Issue Committee in preparation for the TSHL Legislative Session to be conducted in the House Chambers, September 2012. The Executive Committee was formed by the Officers, chairs of all committees and representatives of the 28 TSHL districts not covered by an officer or committee chair. Speaker Graham convened the new executive committee immediately following the closing session to set the calendar for the 2011 - 2013 term, authorize signatures to sign documents and authorize special committees.

The Orientation session provided training for all new members and incumbents. Linda Parrish, College Station, was chair of the Training Committee and coordinated the training events. Trainers included:

  • Chris Kyker of Abilene, Workshop for New Members: TSHL Call for Leadership or "I've been elected! Now What?"
  • Betty Ford, DADS, Director of Area Agencies on Aging Support, Topic: The Texas Aging Network and Overview of the 82nd Legislative Session
  • Bruce Davis of Abilene, Topic: Sexless, Stingy, Sarcasm, Sickly, Senile - That's what you think!
  • Jim Hine, former Commissioner DADS and President TSHL Foundation, Topic: Volunteer Advocate Program for the Elderly/Follow - up of HB 4154, 81st Session.
  • Bruce Bower, Deputy Director, Texas Legal Service Center, Topic: Advocacy for Seniors.
Speakers for dinner events included: Representative Elliott Naishtat, District 49, Austin; Chris Traylor, Commissioner DADS; and Don Green, Lieutenant Governor's Staff. Entertainment was provided by TSHL members Bob Smith, country and gospel singer of Granbury and the Grand Ole Opry singer Mannon Mints of Victoria. Several members participated in Tuesday night open mike show. Highlight of the evening was "Mozart" played by Al Campbell on washtub string instrument and a surprise performance by the not quite ready prime time singers from San Antonio, TSHL members Doris Griffin and Jene Liaci. The TSHL duo appointed by Governor Perry to the Joint Legislative Committee on Aging presented a skit about the committee. Performing were Betty Streckfuss and Walter Graham (substituting for Homer Lear).

Jane Blay of Brownsville, chair of the Awards Committee, assisted in the presentation of Service awards to 28 members who had served four or more terms since 1986. Heading the list was
  • , charter member from Edinburg, 11 terms; Homer Lear, San Antonio, nine terms and Jetta Roberts, El Paso, eight terms. Other awards were presented to Albert Campbell, Bryan, Members' Choice; Executive Committee Performance presented to Elsie Whiteside, Laird Hill, Betty Trotter, Amarillo and Jetta Roberts, El Paso; Outstanding Leadership to Homer Lear, San Antonio and Oscar Garcia, Fort Worth and Speaker's Commendation Award to Pat Porter, Big Spring and Linda Parrish, College Station.
